Poyang Lake, Freshwater lake in Jiangxi Province, China
Poyang Lake is a large freshwater body in Jiangxi Province with seasonal changes in size. The surface area shifts from roughly 1,000 square kilometers during dry periods to about 4,400 square kilometers when heavy rains arrive.
The lake formed around 400 CE when the Yangtze River shifted its southern course, causing waters from the Gan River to accumulate in the Poyang County region. This geological change shaped the landscape that exists today.
The lake waters support traditional fishing communities, although a complete fishing ban was implemented in 2020 to protect the marine biodiversity.
The lake lies roughly 50 kilometers north of Nanchang and connects to the Yangtze River via a narrow channel. The water quality meets Class II standards, making it an important resource for the surrounding region.
Around half a million migratory birds gather here during winter months, including the vast majority of the world's Siberian crane population. This location serves as one of the most important wintering grounds for these and other bird species on their migration routes.
