Göppingen, Administrative district at the foothills of Swabian Jura, Germany
Göppingen is an administrative district at the foothills of the Swabian Jura in Baden-Württemberg, spanning approximately 642 square kilometers. The Fils River flows through its territory, and 38 municipalities including nine towns form its administrative structure, with Göppingen serving as the administrative center and largest hub.
The district was established in 1938 through the merger of two municipalities, Geislingen an der Steige and Göppingen. Its boundaries remained largely unchanged during the 1973 administrative reform and have kept their present shape since then.
The region carries the name Stauferkreis, connecting it to the medieval Hohenstaufen dynasty that established power here. Visitors can see traces of this heritage reflected in local buildings and how communities present their past today.
The district is easily accessible by car or train with several entry points across multiple towns. Visitors should note that the region is hilly and hiking in the southern areas can be challenging.
The area hosts the headquarters of Märklin, the world-renowned maker of model train equipment, and the European base of software company TeamViewer. These two companies have made the region an important center for specialized manufacturing and technology.
