Helwan, Metropolitan district in South Area, Egypt.

Helwan is a district in South Cairo that stretches along the eastern bank of the Nile River. It combines residential neighborhoods, educational institutions, and industrial zones across its urban layout.

The area started as a spa resort around 1872 with natural thermal springs, then transformed into an industrial hub after 1952. This shift from leisure destination to manufacturing center reshaped what the place meant for the region.

The district blends residential blocks with schools and manufacturing facilities that shape how people move through their daily routines. Walking through its streets, you notice how these different zones sit side by side, creating a working-class character that defines the area today.

The district connects to central Cairo through the Metro Line 1 terminus, which handles thousands of daily commuters. Planning a visit is easiest by using public transportation to reach the area.

Natural thermal springs discovered by a German physician led to bath houses built in 1871 and 1872. These hot springs remain in the landscape today, though they no longer serve as the main attraction they once were.
