Wasatch Range, Mountain range in Utah and Idaho, United States
This mountain range stretches 160 miles (260 kilometers) from central Utah to the Idaho border and forms the western edge of the Rocky Mountains. It includes several peaks, among them Mount Nebo at 11,928 feet (3,636 meters), and crosses ten counties.
The Ute peoples used the passes in these mountains long before European settlers arrived for trade and seasonal migrations. Later, these crossings attracted pioneers who settled along the western slopes.
The name comes from the Ute language and means mountain pass or low pass over a high ridge. This origin reflects how important the crossings were for travelers and early inhabitants.
The mountains offer many hiking trails and several ski resorts that receive large amounts of snow each year. Access comes through different canyons, with conditions varying greatly by elevation and season.
A geological fault runs along the eastern flank and created distinctive rock formations and cave systems such as Timpanogos Cave. This fault zone remains active today and continues to shape the landscape.
