Southern Great Plain, Statistical planning region in southeastern Hungary.
The Southern Great Plain is an administrative region covering southeastern Hungary and consists of three counties spanning a large flat territory. It stretches from the central plains down toward the Romanian and Serbian borders, with Szeged serving as its main city.
The region took its current administrative form in the 1990s when Hungary reorganized to meet European Union requirements. This change updated how the territory was divided and managed compared to the older county-based system.
Agriculture and rural crafts have shaped daily life here for generations, and these traditions remain visible in how the landscape is used. Visitors notice farmland, traditional villages, and people maintaining centuries-old ways of working the land.
This is a large flat area best explored by car, as distances between towns are considerable and public transport options are limited in some parts. Szeged in the center offers the most amenities and serves as the best base for exploring the region.
The region contains some of the oldest archaeological sites in Central Europe, with remains dating to the Stone and Bronze ages. These prehistoric discoveries often go unnoticed by visitors despite their importance to understanding early European settlement.
