Auli, Ski resort in Chamoli district, India
Auli is a ski resort in the Chamoli district of India, located between 2500 and 3050 meters (8200 and 10,000 feet) elevation on a mountainside. The runs cover about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) with a vertical drop of around 500 meters (1640 feet).
In the 8th century, Shankaracharya founded Jyotir Math nearby, bringing recognition to the area as a spiritual site. Later, traders and nomadic groups used the route as a trading path through the mountains.
The name comes from the Sanskrit word for meadow, referring to the open slopes once used by herders. Visitors today come here to see Nanda Devi, one of the country's highest peaks, which appears on clear days.
A ropeway connects the resort to Joshimath at around 3000 meters (10,000 feet) elevation. The nearest airport is at Jolly Grant in Dehradun, about 280 kilometers (174 miles) away.
The slopes host over 520 plant species, including nearly 500 flowering varieties. This diversity makes the site one of the richest botanical areas at this elevation.
