15th of May City, suburb of eastern Helwan, Greater Cairo, Egypt
15th of May City is a planned urban settlement located south of Cairo, developed since the late 1970s and now spanning thousands of acres. It features modern infrastructure including wide roads, parks, residential areas, schools, hospitals, shopping malls, and industrial zones on its southern edge.
Construction began in the late 1970s as part of efforts to address housing shortages and overcrowding in Cairo. The name commemorates the Corrective Revolution of 1971, a political shift under President Sadat.
The city sits south of Cairo with easy access to the main urban centers. Wide roads and clear organization make it straightforward to navigate between different areas and facilities.
Despite its modern design with green spaces, the area faces environmental challenges including morning odors from nearby industrial operations. This contrast between planned infrastructure and real-world conditions often surprises new arrivals.
