Skyhawk, Pendulum ride in Sandusky, US
Skyhawk is a pendulum ride at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, built around two long arms that face each other and swing in opposite directions. Each arm carries a row of riders seated side by side, so the entire group moves together through the arc.
Skyhawk opened at Cedar Point in May 2006 and was among the first pendulum rides of its kind to appear in North American amusement parks. Its arrival came during a period when parks were adding large-scale swing and pendulum attractions to their lineups.
The name Skyhawk refers to a bird of prey, fitting for a ride that sends riders sweeping through the air. Standing among roller coasters and other steel structures at Cedar Point, it draws attention simply by the way it moves.
The ride has a minimum height requirement, and anyone with back problems or heart conditions should check whether boarding is appropriate for them. Wait times tend to be shorter early in the morning or in the last hour before the park closes.
When it opened, Skyhawk was rated as one of the tallest pendulum rides of its kind in the world, with the arms reaching about 125 feet (38 meters) above the ground. This makes it noticeably taller than most similar rides found in other parks.
