E-ninnu, Sumerian temple ruins in Girsu, Iraq
The temple complex includes stone foundations, mudbrick walls, and remnants of water management systems spanning across the archaeological site in Dhi Qar Governorate.
Built around 2120 BC and dedicated to the god Ningirsu, E-ninnu temple served as a center for religious ceremonies under multiple Lagash rulers including Ur-Nanshe and Gudea.
The temple contained administrative records written on cuneiform tablets, detailing daily operations and religious ceremonies of ancient Sumerian civilization.
Visitors can access the archaeological site through guided tours organized by the Iraq State Board of Antiquities and Heritage in coordination with local authorities.
Recent excavations in 2023 revealed previously unknown sections of the temple complex alongside a Sumerian palace and numerous administrative tablets.
