La Ventanilla is a coastal village along the Pacific with a wide sandy beach that stretches toward the eastern end of the area. At that eastern end stands a notable rock formation with a natural opening that gives the place its name.
The place started as a coconut plantation with a small population and grew following a major hurricane in the late 1990s. Electricity arrived around the turn of the century, marking a turning point for the area's development.
The village is shaped by families who work to protect sea turtles and crocodiles through hands-on conservation programs. Visitors can participate in activities that help safeguard the mangroves and coastal wildlife that define the area.
The village is reached by a dirt road from Highway 175, located a few kilometers west of Mazunte. Taxis from nearby towns provide convenient transport options for visitors.
The Tonameca River estuary creates a lagoon system surrounded by mangroves where visitors can paddle by canoe and spot kingfishers, herons, and other bird species. This waterway experience differs from exploring the open beach.
