Santo Domingo Tehuantepec extends across 965 square kilometers at an elevation of 55 meters, containing 120 communities within its municipal territory.

The region functioned as a secondary capital of the Zapotec kingdom until Spanish forces established control in the early sixteenth century.

The municipal market system features four trading centers where female merchants, known as Tehuanas, maintain strong commercial leadership positions.

The municipality connects to both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the Interoceanic Corridor, which includes railway infrastructure for goods transportation.

Local celebrations called velas incorporate specific processions and offerings to patron saints, with the Vela Sandunga commemorating the regional anthem.
