Hannover Region is an administrative district in Lower Saxony that brings together 21 municipalities ranging from urban neighborhoods to small rural towns. The district covers parts of the North German Plain between Steinhuder Meer in the west and the Leine river valley in the east.
The district was created in 2001 when the city of Hanover joined with the surrounding county to form a single entity. This reorganization brought urban and rural areas under one administrative roof.
The regional parliament holds regular sessions in Hanover, making decisions that affect the cultural development of all 21 municipalities within its jurisdiction.
Buses and light rail lines connect the municipalities within the district and provide good links between urban and rural areas. Many regional trains stop at stations in smaller towns and offer direct connections to Hanover.
The district is the only administrative body in Lower Saxony where a major city without its own county government forms part of a regional structure. Hanover retains its status as an independent city while serving as the center of the district at the same time.
