Chiang Mai, Province in northern Thailand
The province spans 20,107 square kilometers of diverse terrain, encompassing mountains, valleys, and rivers, with Doi Inthanon peak reaching 2,565 meters above sea level.
Founded in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, the region maintained independence until 1558 when Burmese forces occupied it for over 200 years.
The province includes communities of hill tribes such as Akha, Hmong, Karen, Lahu, Lisu, Tai Yai, and Yao, each maintaining distinct traditions and practices.
The administrative region divides into 25 districts, containing 204 sub-districts and 2,066 villages, with Chiang Mai city serving as the provincial capital.
The provincial seal displays a white elephant within a glass pavilion, representing both royal significance and Buddhist teachings in Thai administration.
