Mazunte

Mazunte, Coastal town in Oaxaca, Mexico

Mazunte is a coastal locality in Oaxaca situated along the Pacific shore with three interconnected beaches fringed by coconut palms. The terrain rises gently from sea level, creating a natural setting where beaches meet vegetation.

The town was once a center for sea turtle fishing until 1970, operating a processing facility that handled thousands of animals yearly. Following a ban, the settlement shifted toward marine conservation and sustainable activities.

The town's identity centers on ocean conservation and sustainable livelihoods for residents. You'll find locals engaged in turtle protection efforts, artisan crafts, and eco-friendly tourism throughout the community.

The town is best reached by bus from Oaxaca City, with a journey of roughly four hours to San Pedro Pochutla, then local taxi service for final access. Most areas are walkable once you arrive in the settlement.

Few visitors realize the settlement was once a major hub for turtle product trade before the ban transformed local livelihoods. This reversal illustrates how the community rebuilt itself around ocean preservation instead of resource extraction.
