Nuremberg, Medieval city in Bavaria, Germany

Nuremberg is a major city in Middle Franconia that extends along the Pegnitz River, surrounded by hills and the remains of medieval city walls. Gothic churches, half-timbered houses and stone bridges shape the cityscape, while the area ranges from the castle in the north to the former Nazi rally grounds in the southeast.

In the Middle Ages, the town grew into an important trading center between Italy and Northern Europe, later gaining the status of a free imperial city. After heavy destruction during World War Two, the old town was rebuilt using historical layouts and materials.

Throughout the year, markets fill the squares and streets of the old town, including the famous Christmas market in December with wooden stalls and mulled wine stands. In the courtyards and cellars of old breweries, Franconian beer is served while residents and visitors gather in the small parks along the Pegnitz.

Most sights in the old town are close together and can be explored on foot, while public transport reaches the Documentation Center and Zeppelin grandstand. Many museums and churches close on Mondays or on certain weekdays, so checking opening times beforehand is advisable.

The Hangman's Bridge crosses the Pegnitz near the Executioner's House, which once housed executioners and now shows a museum about this profession. Rock passages and casemates run beneath the castle hill, used as beer storage and air raid shelters, and can be visited on guided tours.
