Middle Franconia, Administrative region in Bavaria, Germany
Middle Franconia is an administrative district in Bavaria with its headquarters in Ansbach, while Nuremberg represents the most populated city in the area. The district sits between Upper Franconia to the north, the Upper Palatinate to the east, Swabia to the south, and Baden-Württemberg to the west.
The area emerged in 1837 from the former Rezatkreis when King Ludwig I reorganized the administrative structure of Bavaria. The renaming connected the district to Franconian history and replaced the earlier river designation.
The five independent cities of Nuremberg, Ansbach, Erlangen, Fürth, and Schwabach form the centers of education, commerce, and regional traditions.
The district divides into seven counties and five independent cities, each maintaining its own administrative structures. The authorities in Ansbach coordinate the higher-level administrative tasks for the entire district.
The coat of arms combines three elements: the black-and-white Hohenzollern lozenges, the Franconian rake, and the imperial eagle. This combination reflects the political and dynastic past of the region.
