Dhaka Division, Administrative division in Central Bangladesh.
Dhaka Division is an administrative unit in central Bangladesh that stretches across several districts and includes large parts of the lowland around the capital. The area combines urban centers with rural regions connected by rivers, canals and wide fields.
The region became an important center under the Mughals in the early 17th century when they expanded their administration here. After British colonial rule and the independence of Bangladesh the area remained the political and economic heartland of the country.
The name comes from Sanskrit and refers to an old settlement that grew along the riverbank. Today mosques, temples and festivals shape daily life in the neighborhoods and villages.
Travelers should be prepared for heavy traffic and dense development in the core areas while more distant districts show a rural character. Moving around usually works through local shared taxis, ferries or buses between the different places.
Near the place called Wari old coins and pottery were found that point to trade connections reaching as far as the Mediterranean. The finds show that goods were transported over long distances more than two thousand years ago.
