Colorado, Western state in the Mountain region, United States

Colorado extends across 104,094 square miles of mountains, forests, high plains, mesas, canyons, plateaus, rivers, and desert lands at 2,073 meters elevation.

The region transformed during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush between 1858 and 1862, leading to its incorporation as the 38th state in 1876.

Native American heritage combines with Spanish colonial influences and migration waves, forming regional traditions visible in art, food, and celebrations throughout 64 counties.

The state contains 42 state parks, 4 national parks, 8 national monuments, and 11 national forests that support year-round outdoor activities and nature exploration.

The Continental Divide splits Colorado's water flow, sending rivers east toward the Atlantic Ocean and west through the Colorado River toward the Pacific Ocean.
